China Sourcing Insights
A lower listing price does not necessarily mean a lower cost of importing.
Quick answer: 1688 is oriented toward China’s domestic wholesale market, while Alibaba.com is oriented toward international B2B sourcing. An overseas buyer should compare the same specification, quantity, payment and delivery responsibilities, not just two screenshots of unit prices. 1688 can be attractive when the buyer can manage payment and China-side logistics; Alibaba.com may simplify international communication and eligible platform payment.
Neither marketplace guarantees that a listing represents the factory you think it does, or that a low unit price survives inspection, shipping and import charges.
At a glance: 1688 vs Alibaba.com
| Buying issue | 1688 | Alibaba.com |
|---|---|---|
| Typical target market | Domestic Chinese wholesale | International B2B sourcing |
| Quoted product prices | Commonly framed for domestic trade; inclusions vary | Commonly presented for overseas trade; inclusions vary |
| Supplier communication | Chinese-language workflow often matters | International communication is more common |
| Overseas payment | Eligibility and payment route may require setup | Platform-supported methods available for eligible orders |
| Domestic delivery | China-side receiving and consolidation may be needed | Depends on seller and order terms |
| Export and shipping | Buyer may need to arrange additional steps | Seller or logistics options may cover more steps |
| Payment protection | Check specific order and available remedies | Eligible Alibaba.com Trade Assurance orders have programme-specific terms |
The table describes common workflows, not contractual guarantees. The account, seller, product and destination determine what is actually possible.
Is 1688 cheaper? Run the same-product test
Suppose you see a lower domestic listing price for a storage container on 1688 and a higher quote on Alibaba.com. That is not yet an apples-to-apples comparison. One quote could omit export cartons, logo printing, sample approvals or freight; the other could include them. Material grade and wall thickness could also differ.
Ask each supplier for the same five confirmations:
- Product equivalence: dimensions, material, wall thickness, colour, packaging and model version.
- Order equivalence: quantity, MOQ, mixed-SKU policy, rejected-item handling and sample cost.
- Commercial equivalence: currency, validity, tooling, bank or payment fees, and order lead time.
- Delivery equivalence: the named delivery term and place, freight inclusions and export responsibilities.
- Quality equivalence: sample approval process, defect criteria, inspection access and rework policy.
A decision based on the lowest visible listing price skips nearly all of these questions.
How overseas buyers may pay on 1688
1688 is primarily domestic, but not every foreign buyer has to use the same payment route. WorldFirst publishes region-specific options for eligible international buyers, including World Account and 1688-related payment products. Its October 2026 UK guidance describes World Pay for eligible buyers, while other regional materials describe additional options. Do not assume a feature is available in your country or account.
Practical steps before relying on any cross-border payment option:
- Confirm the buyer entity and account-eligibility requirements with the provider.
- Check any identity-verification, 1688 account authorisation, currency or funding requirements.
- Confirm whether the payment remains linked to the actual 1688 order, what transaction evidence is provided and what dispute channels apply.
- Confirm who will receive, inspect, consolidate and export the goods if the supplier only delivers domestically.
A payment solution solves payment access. It does not automatically solve sourcing checks, product quality, consolidation or import compliance.
Alibaba.com: international convenience with defined limits
Alibaba.com offers international-oriented B2B sourcing and, for eligible orders, Trade Assurance. Its own payment guide instructs buyers to pay through Alibaba.com rather than outside the platform to preserve the relevant protection. The programme is not a promise that every quality dispute will succeed; eligibility, order wording, evidence and programme rules matter.
An overseas-facing quotation can still exclude important charges. Ask the seller to state the term and named place of delivery, product specification, inspection arrangements and which fees are outside the price.
Worked comparison: what the spreadsheet should show
The following amounts are illustrative assumptions only, not current supplier or platform prices. They show why a lower unit price can mislead.
| Example cost for 500 units | Route A: 1688-style local purchase | Route B: international B2B quote |
|---|---|---|
| Quoted product unit cost | $4.00 | $4.80 |
| Product subtotal | $2,000 | $2,400 |
| Buyer-side local handling / consolidation | $180 | $0 |
| Payment / currency processing | $55 | $35 |
| Export preparation | $140 | $0 |
| Freight (same destination assumption) | $780 | $780 |
| Quality-check budget | $180 | $180 |
| Illustrative subtotal before import charges | $3,335 | $3,395 |
The two routes differ by only $60 in this example even though the listing unit prices differ by $0.80. The example excludes any destination-specific duty and tax, storage, delivery or compliance costs. These items would need to be added consistently to both quotes. A real order may favour either route.
Who should choose which route?
1688 may fit if you have reliable Chinese-language communication, a suitable payment account or confirmed arrangement, China-side receiving/inspection, export logistics and sufficient price savings after all extra steps.
Alibaba.com may fit if you prefer international-facing supplier communication, want to structure an eligible on-platform transaction, and the total quoted terms compare well with local-market alternatives.
Neither route is right yet if the specification is incomplete, you cannot identify who is selling or making the goods, the payment beneficiary is unclear, or the supplier refuses to document quality and delivery responsibilities.

Please quote this exact specification for 500 units and state: legal seller name, material and dimensions, item and export-carton packaging, sample cost, MOQ, unit price, total price, quotation validity, lead time, payment method/fees, delivery term and named place, available inspection arrangement, and included/excluded shipping charges. Please identify any items that differ from the attached specification.
Change the quantity and attach the actual product brief before sending. For material and quality-sensitive orders, also request the details of who will manufacture and inspect the goods.
Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners buy directly from 1688?
Some overseas buyers can access eligible cross-border payment routes, but availability depends on their country, account and provider. Buying still requires agreement on receiving, domestic delivery, export and quality responsibilities.
Does a manufacturer listing prove the seller owns a factory?
No. Check the legal entity and actual production arrangement. Read how to distinguish a factory from a trading company.
